The Blind Side February 23, 2011

Filed under: Meet a goddess! — celebrationgoddess @ 6:54 am

WOW WHAT A GODDESS WEDNESDAY –
(enjoy learning about a goddess!)

I watched this wonderful movie The Blind Side last night and recommend you see it if you haven’t. It was an incredibly inspirational story. So our goddess for the week is Leigh Anne Roberts Tuohy.

She is an American interior decorator and graduate of the University of Mississippi in the early 1980s. She is best known for being featured in Michael Lewis’s 2006 book, The Blind Side, later made into a 2009 feature film. In the film, Tuohy was portrayed by actress Sandra Bullock, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the performance.

Tuohy resides in Memphis, TN. She and her husband own more than 82 fast food franchises including Taco Bell, KFC, and Long John Silver’s. She is the adoptive mother of former Ole Miss player and Baltimore Ravens first-round draft selection and starting offensive tackle Michael Oher. Michael came from a broken family and the Tuohy’s took in Michael and ended up adopting him. Oher eventually increased his 0.6 grade point average to a 2.52 GPS by the end of his senior year, went to college and became a professional football player.

Ta Da! She’s Makes a Mean Sweet Potato Bake! February 16, 2011

Filed under: Meet a goddess! — celebrationgoddess @ 5:52 am

WOW WHAT A GODDESS WEDNESDAY –
(enjoy learning about a goddess!)

Goddess of the week is: Kris Laskowski Horn

Again Facebook is bringing friends back together! I’ve been yakking with Kris who lives in St. Petersburg Florida. She actually was a friend of my younger sister and informed me that she remembers playing at my house with my sister’s stamp collection. Now that’s just exciting beyond words!!! And come on what could be cooler? A woman willing to share her cute hair in rollers picture!!!

What’s up with Kris? What makes her tick? She’s a stay at home Mom. Volunteers on the PTA And in her words “I enjoy it much more than I ever thought I would although it is a lot of work and trying to get volunteers is exhausting. If people think the same 6 women are doing all the work at their kid’s schools all the time it’s probably because that’s exactly what’s happening!”

She digs grooving to the oldies at the gym and held a career in advertising prior to going the full-time Mommy direction.

Kris and I were on the Pom Pon squad in high school together and her two sisters were also pommies! They do the “Thrill the World” dance at the St. Pete Pier. It’s an annual Guinness Book of World Records type event to try to get the most people in a spot doing the Thriller dance at the same time across the world. They dress like zombies doing the Thriller dance. The need to practice for weeks ahead of time. If you’d like to participate,

http://thrilltheworld.com/

You can participate this year in Rockford, Chicago, or Joliet. Thrill Time is 2:00 PM GMT Saturday, October 29, 2011 and 2:00 AM GMT Sunday, October 30, 2011.

Here is a You Tube clip of Kris and her daughter (the little girl in brown) participating in the Thriller dance:

And what about her sweet potato bake? She tells me it’s her family’s fav at Thanksgiving. A Paula Deen cookbook original!

Abdulrahman Ibrahim Ibn Sori February 2, 2011

Filed under: Meet a goddess! — celebrationgoddess @ 8:08 pm

WOW WHAT A GODDESS WEDNESDAY –
(enjoy learning about a goddess!)

I know usually I would feature a woman, but I saw a very interesting program tonight about a slave from the 1800’s. He loved a slave woman from the plantation and they had many children. His owner freed them both and they spent a lot of time trying to free their children.

He was born in 1762 in Timbo, West Africa, (in present day Guinea, Fouta Djallon). He was known as the “Prince of Slaves” or “Prince.” He was a Fulbe or Fulani, (Fula) of the land of Fouta Djallon. Ibrahim left Futa in 1774 to study in Mali at Timbuktu. Ibrahim was leader of one of his father’s army divisions. After winning a battle against a warring nation, he took with him a few soldiers to report back to his father, when he was ambushed, captured, and sold to slave traders in 1788 at the age of 26. He was bought by a Natchez, Mississippi cotton plantation owner, and eventually became the overseer of the plantation of Thomas Foster. In 1794 he married Isabella, another slave of Foster’s, and eventually fathered a large family: five sons and four daughters.

By using his knowledge of growing cotton in Fouta Djallon, Abd al-Rahman Ibrahim rose to a position of authority on the plantation and became the de facto foreman. This granted him the opportunity to grow his own vegetable garden and sell at the local market. During this time, he met an old acquaintance, Dr. John Cox. Dr. Cox was an Irish surgeon who had served on an English ship. He was the first white man to reach Timbo after being stranded by his ship and falling ill. Cox stayed ashore for six months and was taken in by the Abd al-Rahman Ibrahima family. Cox appealed to Foster to sell him “Prince” so he could return to Africa. However, Foster would not budge, since he viewed Abd al-Rahman Ibrahim as indispensable to the Foster farm (among other reasons). Dr. Cox continued, until his death in 1816, to seek Ibrahim’s freedom, to no avail. After Cox died, Ibrahim continued the cause.

In 1826, Abd al-Rahman Ibrahim wrote a letter to his relatives in Africa. A local newspaperman, Andrew Marschalk, who was originally from New York, sent a copy to Senator Thomas Reed in Washington, who forwarded it to the U.S. Consulate in Morocco. Since Abdal-Rhaman Ibrahim wrote in Arabic, Marschalk and the U.S. government assumed that he was a Moor. After the Sultan of Morocco Abderrahmane read the letter, he asked President Adams and Secretary of State Henry Clay to release Abd al-Rahman Ibrahim. In 1828, Thomas Foster agreed to the release of Ibrahim, without payment, with the stipulation that Ibrahim return to Africa and not live as a free man in America.

Before leaving the U.S., Ibrahim and his wife went to various states and Washington, D.C. He solicited donations, through the press, personal appearances, the American Colonization Society and politicians, to free his family back in Mississippi. Word got back to Foster, who considered this a breach of the agreement. Abdul-Rahman’s actions and freedom were also used against President John Quincy Adams by future president Andrew Jackson during the presidential election.

After ten months, Abd al-Rahman Ibrahim and Isabella had raised only half the funds to free their children. They made arrangements to leave America. He went to Monrovia, Liberia with his wife. Abd al-Rahman Ibrahim lived for four months before he contracted a fever and died at the age of 67. He never saw Fouta Djallon or his children again.

Popcorn Surprise! January 19, 2011

Filed under: Meet a goddess! — celebrationgoddess @ 11:15 am

WOW WHAT A GODDESS WEDNESDAY –
(enjoy learning about a goddess!)

 January 19th is Popcorn Day!
Little is known about where or how this national holiday started, but it is here to stay. Celebrate National Popcorn Day the only way that it should be celebrated – with a big bowl of yummy popcorn. And, in honor of this popcorn holiday I’ll share with you one of my favorite ways to enjoy air-popped popcorn: As your popcorn is popping, combine 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a bowl with 1/2 a packet of ranch dressing seasoning mix (the kind that you would normally use to make ranch dressing.) Pour the mixture over the popcorn and fold it in. Then enjoy!

So because of popcorn let’s learn about a Greek goddess this week.

Demeter (goddess of fertility)

The Greek earth goddess par excellence, who brings forth the fruits of the earth, particularly the various grains. She taught mankind the art of sowing and ploughing so they could end their nomadic existence. As such, Demeter was also the goddess of planned society. She was very popular with the rural population.

Demeter is mother of Persephone. When Persephone was abducted by Hades, lord of the underworld, Demeter wandered the earth in search of her lost child. During this time the earth brought forth no grain. Finally Zeus sent Hermes to the underworld, ordering Hades to restore Persephone to her mother. However, before she left, Hades gave her a pomegranate (a common fertility symbol). When she ate from it, she was bound to spend a third of the year with her husband in the infernal regions. Only when her daughter is with her, Demeter lets things grow (summer). The dying and blossoming of nature was thus connected with Demeter.

In Demeter’s honor as a goddess of marriage, women in Athens, and other centers in Greece, celebrated the feast of Thesmophoria. At Athens and some other places the festival was of three days. The first day at Athens was the anodos, the “way up” to the sacred space, the Thesmophorion near the hill of the Pnyx. The second day was a grieving day of fasting (nesteia) without garlands, seated on the ground, without fire in some cities, in which pomegranate seeds only were eaten; those that fell on the ground were the food of the dead and might not be picked up. Insults (aischrologia) might also have been exchanged among the women. The third day, especially the evening and night that began the Greek day, was a meat feast in celebration of the Kalligeneia, a “goddess of beautiful birth”.

In ancient art, Demeter was often portrayed (sitting) as a solemn woman, often wearing a wreath of braided ears of corn. Well-known is the statue made by Knidos (mid forth century BCE). Her usual symbolic attributes are the fruits of the earth and the torch, the latter presumably referring to her search for Persephone. Her sacred animals were the snake (an earth-creature) and the pig (another symbol of fertility).

Shameless! January 12, 2011

Filed under: Meet a goddess! — celebrationgoddess @ 8:33 am

WOW WHAT A GODDESS WEDNESDAY –
(enjoy learning about a goddess!)

Pamela Madsen

I was looking at the library catalog for cook books, go figure! I came upon this book and thought all of you may think it’s interesting. Shameless: How I Ditched the Diet, Got Naked, Found True Pleasure. I found this Pamela on Facebook and sent a friend request which she accepted.

I pulled her bio from her website. http://www.beingshameless.com/  Take a peek! I know all of you are RED HOT GODDESSES already (or at least we all should feel that way about ourself)!!! Pick up her book. I’m going to give it a read. Cause girls, we all could use a boost, a laugh and to feel good about ourselves!!!

Pamela Maden is at it again—this time in the name of genuine sexual liberation for women. Armed with more than four years of explicit experience and study, she is lifting the veil from the nature of women’s desire, pleasure and happiness and emerging as a leading voice for erotic human rights. She is rallying women to live the full and integrated lives that are possible only when they embrace their sexuality. And she walks her talk, having worked with sexual healers and surrogates in the sacred intimacy underground. She’s taken countless workshops and become a certified sex educator. Just as she did with infertility, Pamela is bringing new focus on sexual behaviors and predilections, speaking and writing from the heart without judgment or hypocrisy.

“My goal is to help emancipate women from the ‘woulda’s’ and ‘shoulda’s’ that have kept us in denial and darkness for thousands of years. I know it’s possible for women to heal their sexual identities and embrace their bodies and desires in a safe, sane and consensual way—even within the bounds of marriage,” says Pamela.

Behind the Book

Maybe it’s a congenital disorder. Maybe it’s something I learned as an itty-bitty baby. But when I find something wonderful or liberating or even mildly helpful, I can’t keep my mouth shut. Even my mother, the original unfiltered talker, marvels at my compulsion to spill the beans whenever I’m on a mission.

Over the past four years, I took a pretty zany voyage from an honest-to-goodness repressed, monogamous, middle-aged, hyper-achieving, chubby woman with two kids to an honest-to-goodness monogamous, middle-aged, accomplished chubby “sex goddess” with two kids.

Once I owned up to my deepest, untapped desires, I discovered a wellspring of happiness and self-confidence inside me that extended to every part of my life. Whoa! I thought. This is incredible! Everyone should know they have the power to experience life in all its richness right now, just as they are. No diets, no plastic surgery, no nothing. Just intact, healthy sexuality.

If I can stop warring with my weight and workaholism, I think most people can. I know that when I stopped denying my hearty and normal sexual appetites, I started losing my uncontrollable urges to overeat, overwork and over-compensate. For the first time, I could relax in my own skin.

Admitting your desires takes a tanker-load of courage, and a rip-stop web of support. That’s what I’m here to provide. That’s my mission. That’s why I wrote SHAMELESS.

With few nonprofessional people willing to speak openly about the power of sensuality, the average sexually curious person is stuck with dry textbooks or fictional characters that they can enjoy but can’t emulate. I ain’t no Cougar Town Courtney Cox. Most men I know aren’t starring in Hung. But it doesn’t mean we can’t feel as sexy. And when we feel that sexy, that good about ourselves, when we feel we deserve pleasure, and lots of it, that’s when so many things that seemed impossible can become our new reality. As Dr. Christiane Northrup so succinctly put it, “Pleasure is a life-changer.”  Who better to write a tell-all about allowing pleasure to change your life than a woman who lived it and can’t keep a secret? Yeah, I know. I’m shameless.

Sisters of the Casted Foot January 5, 2011

Filed under: Meet a goddess! — celebrationgoddess @ 12:11 am

WOW WHAT A GODDESS WEDNESDAY –
(enjoy learning about a goddess!)

Meet our first beautiful goddess of
2011 – Jodi Werhane Rehberg!

Jodi is my new goddess gal pal. I went to school with her sister Jamie. I so enjoy Jodi’s clever wit! I can’t wait to meet up with her soon to dance in our fancy boots. If you know about my foot surgery, you know I’ve been seeing Dr. Hottie each week for an update of how my foot is healing. I teased Jodi because she happens to own her own medical transcription company and I thought perhaps she could provide her services to Dr. Hottie!

Unfortunately I suggested that she hurt her foot so that she could get an appointment with him. Poor Jodi ended up breaking her foot before Christmas so we have been commiserating about our little footies ever since. Maybe if I suggest that she’ll win the lotto, maybe she will!

Miss Jodi is such a hard workin’ goddess. She is a mother of 2 boys, owns her own business and works part time at Sephora. What a gal!!!

WOW WHAT A GODDESS WEDNESDAY –
(enjoy learning about a goddess!)

Sacha Goldberger’s grandmother Frederika, 91, dressed as a superhero

When a photographer named Sacha Goldberger realized his grandmother Frederika, age 91, was lonely and might be suffering from depression, he proposed an unusual course of therapy: a superhero photoshoot. “Super Mamika,” as Frederika is now known, became an internet sensation thanks to the costumed photos, which show her in all kinds of exaggerated heroic poses. She’s the grandma everyone wants to have, and she now has thousands of fans on MySpace.

Frederika is a hero in real life, too. Living in Hungary during World War II, she sheltered 10 Jewish people she knew from the Nazis. Later in her life, when Hungary was run by a communist regime, she fled to France under threat of execution. This is one granny who has definitely earned a superhero alter ego!

Below, check out some of the most awesome photos of Super Mamika:

The Virgin Mary December 22, 2010

Filed under: Meet a goddess! — celebrationgoddess @ 6:44 am

WOW WHAT A GODDESS WEDNESDAY – (enjoy learning about a goddess!)

Mary is celebrated around the world as the Divine Feminine by millions of people, many of them Catholics. Those who are devoted to Mary, honor Her as the mother of Jesus. The Blessed Virgin Mary is known as the dispenser of mercy, the ever patient mother, and protectress of humanity, and special protectress of women and children.

Many believe that with the rise of Christianity and papal power, the Goddess slowly disappeared from western culture and faded into the Mists of Avalon . . . . So great was devotion to the Goddess that she was resurrected in the hearts of the people by a new Goddess, Mary, Mother of Jesus.

Officially, the Catholic Church teaches that Mary was mortal and is not a Goddess, but despite this official position, many Catholics honor Mary as a Goddess. Other Catholics revere Mary as Mother of Jesus, but not as divine.

Visions of the Virgin Mary have appeared to thousands of people around the world. Her sacred shrines are at Lourdes in France and Guadalupe in Mexico, as well as many other places. Her apparitions are often to children.

The most prevalent time of year to think about Mary is now. I’ve included many pictures of the Virgin. She is seen everywhere.

My Friend JJ December 15, 2010

WOW WHAT A GODDESS WEDNESDAY –
(enjoy learning about a goddess!)

Dave Jr.'s wedding

This week’s goddess is my one of my oldest friends, Jeanette Jesky. I don’t mean she’s old cause we certainly ARE NOT. We’re like fine wine. Good to the last drop. Oh I’m sorry that’s coffee isn’t it?

We live in the same town. We grew up together. Did all the naughty things that teenagers do together. We were cheerleaders together. She used to call me Richie because my Dad had a real estate business and built us a nice house and we used squeeze Parkay.

We used to walk up to her family’s boat business and beg her mother for hours on end to give us money so we could walk to McDonald’s and get a whole meal for less than $1.00. Cheeseburger, fries and a coke.  Considering it’s been about 30 years, I guess $3.00 for that same meal isn’t a bad thing…Jane would always give in to us. Thanks Mama J!

So now we’re older – ahem. JJ has a great man Dave who she’s been with since we were in high school. Has 3 boys and probably looks the best out of any high school girl from 1981. She’s a runner you know.

I think it’s pretty damn cool to still have a friend from such a long time ago. In sickness and in health, through good times and bad. Oh wait that’s a husband isn’t it? Well we’ve certainly had our good times. And we’ll continue to do so. So Love ya JJ!!!

JJ's family boating on the Fox.
