Moons and Goddesses January 11, 2012

WOW WHAT A GODDESS WEDNESDAY

Good evening,

What a lovely day and night. The drive to work held an hour worth of Espanol for Gringos. Is it sinking in? What did I learn? Unfortunately un poquito.  I did learn that Rosetta Stone totally immerses the student in Spanish with no English words.

What else?  That deep dish pizza eaten in a fancy Asian looking building tastes just as good as if I was sitting on my couch. The moon tonight is still exceptional. In honor of the moon, I’d like to share a poem with you.

SOFT MOON SHINING

My beloved Divine Mother
Dance with me
under the soft moon shining
in the wide open fields
far beyond the toil and trouble
of my busy mind

Dance with me
before the night grows old
while the winds of love
still bow the grasses
and the coyotes howl for you
to step their way

Dance with me my beloved
while the Mystery’s Edge
still flirts in the shadow
of your radiant light

From the book Soft Moon Shining:

God may be in the details, but the goddess is in the questions. Once we begin to ask them, there’s no turning back.  Gloria Steinem

Hope you enjoyed the the day and the poem.

Cute Chick and the Old Crow June 22, 2011

The Cute Chick and the Old Crow

Barb and the Spoiled Brat - the dog not the Old Crow

WOW WHAT A GODDESS WEDNESDAY –
(enjoy learning about a goddess!)

Our Barbie was the sweetest woman. She used to be my step mother in law. And I had the privelege of carrying her train all around the church when she married while hearing a beautiful rendition of Ava Maria. It always makes me cry.  And today I cried as well because our sweet Barb is gone.

She battle hep C so hard for the past 10 years. She had 3 kids, a bunch of grandkids, a spoiled puppy dog, and a well-trained husband – Don! They spent many an hour together laughing and enjoying life.

Barb loved flowers and angels. Years ago I bought them a cute little birdie couple for the garden. The sign said Old Crow and Cute Chick and from that point on, I have always lovingly called them by this name.

I came upon this poem and wanted to share it on this day of rememberance:

“You can shed tears that she is gone,
or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back,
or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left.
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her,
or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her only that she is gone,
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind,
be empty and turn your back.
Or you can do what she’d want:
smile, open your eyes, love and go on.” – David Harkins

I’ll miss you…

25 years! May 25, 2011

WOW WHAT A GODDESS WEDNESDAY –
(enjoy learning about a goddess!)

Wow how can I not feature Oprah as the goddess of the day. It’s her last day on the job in Chicago. 25 years!!! I’ve been at my job nearly as long at 24 years this Friday. So I googled up Oprah and found out some details I did not know. Congrats Oprah. I did enjoy many days with her. I learned a lot and I think that she opened up a lot of people’s eyes and hearts.

Winfrey was originally named Orpah after the Biblical character in the Book of Ruth, but her family and friends “didn’t know how to pronounce it”, and called her “Oprah” instead.Winfrey was born in Mississippi to an unmarried teenage mother.  Her mother, Vernita Lee (born c. 1935) was a housemaid. Winfrey had believed that her biological father was Vernon Winfrey, a coal miner turned barber turned city councilman who had been in the Armed Forces when she was born. Decades later, Mississippi farmer and World War II veteran Noah Robinson Srclaimed to be her biological father.[

After her birth, Winfrey’s mother traveled north and Winfrey spent her first six years living in rural poverty with her grandmother, Hattie Mae Lee (April 15, 1900 – February 27, 1963), who was so poor that Winfrey often wore dresses made of potato sacks, for which the local children made fun of her.[21] Her grandmother taught her to read before the age of three and took her to the local church, where she was nicknamed “The Preacher” for her ability to recite Bible verses. When Winfrey was a child, her grandmother would hit her with a switch when she didn’t do chores or if she misbehaved in any way.

At age six, Winfrey moved to an inner-city neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her mother, who was less supportive and encouraging than her grandmother had been, due in large part to the long hours Vernita Lee worked as a maid. Around the time Winfrey moved in, Lee had given birth to another daughter, Winfrey’s younger half-sister, Patricia who later (on February 2003, at age 43) died of causes related to cocaine addiction. By 1962, Lee was having difficulty raising both daughters so Winfrey was temporarily sent to live with Vernon in Nashville, TN While Winfrey was in Nashville, Lee gave birth to a third daughter. Lee gave this daughter, later also named Patricia, up for adoption in the hope of easing the financial straits that had led to Lee’s being on welfare. Winfrey did not learn she had a second half-sister until 2010. By the time Winfrey moved back in with Lee, Lee had also given birth to a boy named Jeffrey, Winfrey’s half-brother, who died of AIDS related causes in 1989.

Winfrey has stated she was molested by her cousin, her uncle, and a family friend, starting when she was nine years old, something she first claimed to her viewers on a 1986 episode of her TV show, when sexual abuse was being discussed. When Winfrey discussed the alleged abuse with family members at age 24, they refused to accept what she said Winfrey once commented that she had chosen not to be a mother because she had not been mothered well.

At 13, after suffering years of abuse, Winfrey ran away from home. When she was 14, she became pregnant, her son dying shortly after birth. She later said she felt betrayed by the family member who had sold the story to the National Enquirer in 1990. In high school at her poverty was constantly rubbed in her face as she rode the bus to school with fellow African-Americans, some of whom were servants of her classmates’ families. She began to steal money from her mother in an effort to keep up with her free-spending peers, to lie to and argue with her mother, and to go out with older boys.

Her frustrated mother once again sent her to live with Vernon in though this time she did not take her back. Vernon was strict but encouraging, and made her education a priority. Winfrey became an honors student, was voted Most Popular Girl, and joined her high school speech team  placing second in the nation in dramatic interpretation. She won an oratory contest, which secured her a full scholarship to TN University, a  historically black institution, where she studied communication. Her first job as a teenager was working at a local grocery store. At age 17, Winfrey won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant. She also attracted the attention of the local black radio station, WVOL, which hired her to do the news part-time. She worked there during her senior year of high school, and again while in her first two years of college.

Winfrey’s career choice in media would not have surprised her grandmother, who once said that ever since Winfrey could talk, she was on stage. As a child she played games interviewing her corncob doll and the crows on the fence of her family’s property. Winfrey later acknowledged her grandmother’s influence, saying it was Hattie Mae who had encouraged her to speak in public and “gave me a positive sense of myself”. Working in local media, she was both the youngest news anchor and the first black female news anchor at Nashville’s WLAC TV. She moved to Baltimore’s WJZ TV in 1976 to co-anchor the six o’clock news. She was then recruited to join Richard Sher as co-host of WJZ’s local talk show People Are Talking, which premiered on August 14, 1978. She also hosted the local version of Dialin for Dollars there as well.

In 1983, Winfrey relocated to Chicago to host WLS TV’s low-rated half-hour morning talk show, AM Chicago. The first episode aired on January 2, 1984. Within months after Winfrey took over, the show went from last place in the ratings to overtaking Donahue as the highest rated talk show in Chicago. The movie critic Roer Ebert persuaded her to sign a syndication deal with King World. Ebert predicted that she would generate 40 times as much revenue as his television show,  At the Movies. It was renamed  The Oprah Windrey Show, expanded to a full hour, and broadcast nationally beginning September 8, 1986. Winfrey’s syndicated show brought in double Donahue’s national audience, displacing Donahue as the number one day-time talk show in America. And the rest is HISTORY!

WOW WHAT A GODDESS WEDNESDAY –
(enjoy learning about a goddess!)

Janie Forsyth McKinney

May 16 PBS will be featuring a program about the Freedom Fighters: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/freedomriders/

Freedom riders were civil rights activists that rode interstate buses into the segregated US to test the US Supreme Court decision. The case overturned a judgement convicting an African American law student for trepassing by being in a restaurant in a bus terminal which was “whites only”. The first Freedom Ride with 13 riders (seven black, six white) left Washington, D.C., left on buses on May 4, 1961, and was scheduled to arrive in New Orleans on May 17.

The Freedom Riders’ tactics for their journey were to have at least one interracial pair sitting in adjoining seats and at least one black Rider sitting up front (seats usually reserved for white customers only), while the rest would sit scattered throughout the rest of the bus. One rider would abide by the South’s segregation ideals in order to avoid arrest and to contact CORE and arrange bail for those who were arrested.

Violence in Alabama was organized by Police Sergeant Tom Cook (an avid KKK supporter) and the police commissioner. The pair made plans to bring the Ride to an end in Alabama. They assured Gary Thomas Rowe, an FBI informer] and member of Eastview Klavern #13 (the most violent Klan group in Alabama), that the mob would have fifteen minutes to attack the Freedom Riders without any arrests being made. The final plan laid out an initial assault in Anniston with a final assault taking place in Birmingham.

On May 14, Mother’s Day, in Anniston Alabama, a mob of Ku Klux Klansmen, some still in church attire, attacked the first of the two buses (the Greyhound) and slashed its tires. They forced the crippled bus to stop several miles outside of town, and it was firebombed shortly afterwards by the mob chasing it in cars. As the bus burned, the mob held the doors shut, intent on burning the riders to death. Sources disagree, but either an exploding fuel tank or an undercover state investigator brandishing a revolver caused the mob to retreat, allowing the riders to escape the bus. The riders were viciously beaten as they fled the burning bus, and only warning shots fired into the air by highway patrolmen prevented the riders from being lynched. Janie Forsyth McKinney was 12 years old when the Freedom Riders came through her hometown. She watched from inside a store and ran out to help the people who poured from the bus as best she could. Love was in her heart that day. I long for a world with lots of Janies…

WOW WHAT A GODDESS WEDNESDAY –
(enjoy learning about a goddess!)

This week I want to feature LOTS of Goddesses!!! I’ve been taking belly dance classes from Kara Kowert (who was my featured Goddess in October: https://celebrationgoddess.wordpress.com/2010/10/20/shimmy-this-goddess/) and last night we learned about candle dancing. It was interesting we danced with cups of water to practice since we’re newbies. And needless to say, most of us spilled our water! Here’s an example of candle dancing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Enz46SbyBfk

WOW WHAT A GODDESS WEDNESDAY –
(enjoy learning about a goddess!)

Drinks are on their way!

In honor of the Easter Bunny, our goddess of the week is the Playboy Bunny. Think you could do the bunny dip, learn 143 cocktails or never gain more than 1 pound (cause they’d weigh you before work!)??? read on…I definitely remember there was a Playboy in Chicago.

A Playboy Bunny is a waitress at the  Playboy Club. The Playboy Clubs were originally open from 1960 to 1988. The Club re-opened in one location in The Palms Hotel in Las Vegas in 2006. Bunnies wore a costume called a “bunny suit” inspired by the tuxedo-wearing Playboy rabbit mascot, consisting of a corset, bunny ears, a collar, cuffs and a fluffy cottontail.

According to Hugh Hefner, the Bunny was inspired by Bunny’s Tavern in Urbana, Illinois.

Bunny’s Tavern was named for its original owner, Bernard “Bunny” Fitzsimmons, who opened for business in 1936. Serving daily food specials for a mere thirty-five cents, as well as ten-cent draft beers, Bunny’s catered to locals and University of Illinois students alike. One of those students (in the late 1940s) was Hugh Hefner.

Hefner formally acknowledged the origin of the Playboy Bunny in a letter to Bunny’s Tavern, which is now framed and on public display in the bar.

Behavior and training

The Playboy Bunnies were waitresses who served drinks at Playboy Clubs. There were different types of Bunnies, including the Door Bunny, Cigarette Bunny, Floor Bunny, Playmate Bunny and the Jet Bunnies (waitresses that served on the Playboy Jet). To become a Bunny women were first carefully chosen and selected from auditions. Then they underwent thorough and strict training before officially becoming a Bunny. Bunnies were required to be able to identify 143 brands of liquor and know how to garnish 20 cocktail variations. Most dating or mingling with customers was forbidden. Customers were also not allowed to touch the Bunnies, and demerits were given if a Bunny’s appearance was not properly organized. Only the C1, most important “Keyholders” (members of the Playboy Club), were allowed to date a Bunny.

A Bunny also had to master the required maneuvers to work. These included the “Bunny Stance,” a posture that was required in front of patrons. The Bunny must stand with legs together, back arched and hips tucked under. When the Bunny is resting or while waiting to be of service, she must do the “Bunny Perch.” She must sit on the back of a chair, sofa, or railing without sitting too close to a patron. The most famous maneuver of all, the “Bunny Dip,” was invented by Kelly Collins, once renowned for being the “Perfect Bunny”; to do the “Bunny Dip” the Bunny gracefully leaned backwards while bending at the knees with the left knee lifted and tucked behind the right leg. This maneuver allowed the Bunny to serve drinks while keeping her low-cut costume in place. Strict regulations were enforced by special workers in the guise of patrons.

The Playboy Bunny outfit was the first service uniform registered with the US Patent Office. The costume was made from rayon-satin constructed on a merry widow corset. Satin bunny ears, cotton tails, collars with bow ties cuffs with cuff links, black mesh pantyhose and matching high-heeled shoes completed the outfit. A name tag on a satin rosette was pinned over the right hip bone.

The uniforms were custom made for each Bunny at the club they worked in. Whenever the club was open there was a full time seamstress on duty. The costumes were stocked in two pieces, the front part being pre-sewn in different bra cup sizes such as B or C cup. The seamstress would match the Bunnies’ figure to the correct fitting front and back pieces. Then the two pieces were sewn together to fit each person perfectly.

There was a woman in charge of the Bunnies in each club, called the “Bunny Mother.” This was a human resources type of function and a management position. The Bunny Mother was in charge of scheduling work shifts, hiring, firing and training. The Club Manager had only two responsibilities for the Bunnies – floor service and weigh in. Before every shift the Manager would weigh each Bunny. Bunnies could not gain or lose more than one pound (exceptions being made for water retention). Playboy Enterprises required all employees to turn in their costumes at the end of employment and Playboy has some costumes in storage. Occasionally costumes are offered for sale on the Playboy Auction site or eBay. Some of the costumes on eBay may be counterfeit or damaged in some way. Genuine Bunny costumes in good condition have sold for over $10,000. The only two on public display are in the collections of The Smithsonian and the Chicago History Museum.

WOW WHAT A GODDESS WEDNESDAY –
(enjoy learning about a goddess!)

Who cuts your hair? Well Toots cuts mine at Brush n Curl in McHenry!

Toots (Noreen) Kelley has been my hairdresser since I was about 10 years old. She was there for my Dorothy Hamil and my Mrs. Brady shag hair cuts, my perm, my conversion from a brunette to a red head and even knows to cut my hair crooked to make it look straight!!! She’s like a bartender. We share stories of our life every few weeks. How great is that? I just wish she woulda taken pictures of some of the many wacky hair cuts of her customers over the years!!! Thanks Toots Love ya and she’s so much fun!!!
